Description

The Core Professional Trainings are conducted over three full days and serve as unique opportunities for acquisition and refinement of the skills necessary to address contemporary humanitarian challenges. Lectures, case studies, and simulation exercises are integrated into a curriculum narrative informed by legal principles, recent scholarship, contemporary challenges, and current debates. The trainings are tailored to professionals interested in gaining foundational knowledge, developing a strategic perspective, and engaging in exploratory discussions regarding potential responses to emerging legal and policy questions.

Understanding International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and policy as it relates to the challenges of work on the ground is essential for professionals working in humanitarian assistance and protection. This course offers participants a comprehensive foundation in IHL and the skills necessary to apply it in contemporary humanitarian contexts. To date, this training has benefitted participants from across the sector, including both local and international staff from field offices and HQ of operational agencies, research centers, think tanks, academia, and the military. With a reputation for excellence, this course is delivered by of our expert facilitators: academics, practitioners, and policy-makers in the field of IHL. Through lectures, case studies, and simulation exercises, examples of topics that our leading IHL facilitators explore include:

  • Introduction to international humanitarian law
  • Conflict analysis
  • Relationship between international humanitarian law and human rights law
  • Humanitarian protection
  • Protection needs of specific groups in armed conflict
  • Negotiation of humanitarian access
  • Conduct of hostilities and the protection of civilians
  • Humanitarian coordination Implementation and enforcement of international humanitarian law
  • Design of protection initiatives
    The Geneva 2015 Core Professional Training will be offered by PHAP and will be followed by the two-day Thematic Workshop on Islamic Law, Terrorism, and Counterterrorism. Participants are encouraged to apply for both events.

Who should attend?

Humanitarian professionals interested in gaining a comprehensive grounding in the application of IHL and those wishing to engage further in the emerging issues related to IHL and policy. Our trainings also provide an opportunity for professionals interested in meeting peers, exchanging ideas and creating professional networks.
